Lake Melissani is a place of timeless beauty. Near the village of Karavomylos, Lake Melissani is probably the most popular attraction in Kefalonia.
Surrounded by dense forest, descend to a natural work of art in the underground world of Kefalonia and let your footsteps lead you to the cave of N. Beautiful waters with changing shades of blue, as the sun sets, honey walls and countless stalactites will take your breath away and take you to another, mythical and magical world.
During the excavations of 1962, several oil lamps were discovered, plates and figures depicting the god Pan and many nymphs. Legend has it that Melissani Cave was the exact spot where one of these Nymphs, Melissanthi (or Melissani), drowned after being rejected by the god Pan.
Lake Melissani has a unique invisible feature, which can be heard quite strange. The water of the lake is brackish, a mixture of sea water and fresh water. The cave is about 500 meters from the sea, and the water level is one meter above sea level, and the brackish water rises from a system of caves 30 meters deep on one side of the cave and flows silently to the other end. cave, flowing through narrow cracks to the sea. The water reappears in the Katavothres area, on the other side of the island. This was discovered by dye detection experiments in 1959.
The Melissani Lake Cave exudes an intoxicating feeling, as inside the “B” shaped cave there is a lake that has a small island, as well as trees and forests that surround it. Its two chambers, one sunlit and the other dark and ominous covered with stalagmites, algae and moss, create a unique and unforgettable image.
