Did you know that Kefalonia consists of about 365 villages? And everything seems to be different from each other, so that they can satisfy all tastes. Smaller or bigger, by the sea or on a hillside, yet always charming and picturesque, you can find your perfect vacation spot here. But there is a small village that is considered to be the jewel among all in Kefalonia, standing out for its unique beauty and color. The name of the village is Kourkoumelata.
Kourkoumelata remains a well-hidden treasure. Not as famous as Skala or Assos, but just as impressive, they are known as a picturesque village with impressive sea views, colorful houses and gardens, excellent town planning and roads.
In 1953, a catastrophic earthquake destroyed the largest part of Kefalonia. Kourkoumelata was completely destroyed and despair overwhelmed the villagers. However, at that difficult time, the shipowner Georgios Vergotis and his family, who were raised in Kourkoumelata, decided to fully support the reconstruction of the entire village. To do this, however, he demanded that the new village be rebuilt according to the neoclassical architectural trends of the time and the official street plan, with many Swiss influences.
Green gardens, clean public spaces, beautiful buildings, imposing churches, new roads, utilities and facilities were constructed and offered to the villagers. Kourkoumelata was the first village in Kefalonia where electricity and water were installed.
Here, one can find many places worth visiting. Two of the most famous places of the village are the “Vergoti Cultural Center” and the local stadium, where concerts and events are organized mainly during the summer months. The cultural facilities are complemented by the new Spiritual Center located on the opposite side of the road. In addition, there is the village square with palm trees and a monument, which is dedicated to the Vergotis family, as well as the local cafe, which has the shape of a ship.
When wandering on the island of Kefalonia, take a walk around in the village of Kourkoumelata. It will be worth it, since you will have the opportunity to see one of the most beautiful villages in Greece. Do not miss it!
