The Barcaroles < is a very popular holiday all over the island. They are organized every year in the middle of August and will travel your senses to another forgotten Kefalonia. Locals and visitors who want to participate, get on boats and sail to the sea for a few miles outside the port. There they all start singing traditional songs together, while back in the port people dance and celebrate.
The Kantades are songs and this strange kind of melodic traditional songs is a purely unique musical part of the culture of the Ionian Islands and especially in Kefalonia. Their name comes from the Latin verb cantare (= I sing) and the first chant is said to have been created in Lixouri. They play an important role in the lives of the locals. Elderly people with melodic voices can be found in Lithostroto singing in groups, entertaining the people around them just because they like to do it.
