As part of its ongoing Awareness Voyage across the Ionian and Aegean Seas, Seal Greece recently visited Fiskardo, Kefalonia, on the 1st and 2nd of August and Argostoli, Kefalonia, on the 6th and 7th of August. Traveling aboard two solar- and wind-powered vessels — Pelago and Bonnie R — the team is on a mission to raise awareness for the Mediterranean monk seal, one of the world’s most vulnerable marine mammals and an iconic part of Greece’s natural heritage.

The campaign, developed and co-led by the Monk Seal Alliance and the Natural Environment & Climate Change Agency, also under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment & Energy, is carried out in collaboration with Aegean Cargo Sailing, while creating meaningful connections between scientists, sailors, locals, and tourists. Its aim is to promote seal-safe sailing practices and marine conservation across the Greek islands.

In Fiskardo, the Seal Greece team engaged with local residents, boat owners, and visitors to discuss the importance of protecting monk seal habitats and sailing responsibly. On the evening of August 1st, Seal Greece co-hosted a well-received public event with KOSAMARE, a local marine conservation initiative. Held at Cat Square in the harbor, the event featured an outdoor art exhibition and screenings of two short films — including Symvíosi, a poetic tribute to the Mediterranean’s fragile seagrass ecosystems, and Seal Greece’s own awareness video. Families and visitors also took part in hands-on art and educational activities centered on the Mediterranean monk seal, while enjoying food, drinks, and lively discussion under the stars.

The Awareness Voyage will continue its journey with upcoming stops in Ithaca, Zakynthos, Naxos, Paros, Mykonos, Tinos, and Syros — building a growing wave of support for Greece’s marine environment.
