Monastery of Panagia Atros

After two km, leaving the gorge of Poros for Argostoli, a dirt road goes up between oaks in the oldest monastery of Kefalonia, the Monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos of Atros (9th century AD). ). The monastery is built at an altitude of 500 m. In a remote location at the top of Mount Atro.

The monastery celebrates on September 8.

In the newly built small church there is the iconostasis of the pre-earthquake church . In the medieval tower next to the church you can see the old press for the production of wine. In the precinct the wells provided water for the monastery.

A short distance west of the monastery, on a beautiful plateau with large olive trees, the monks cultivated vines. In the afternoon you can see the sunset behind Zakynthos.
